Tate Britain Duveens Commission 2010

artist Fiona Banner @ the tate.   Harrier Jet and Sepecat Jaguar fighter planes.   The Harrier jet is famous for being the only jets that can take off and land vertically. Its always strange seeing videos of a Harrier take off or land like a helicopter or X-wing fighter from star wars.

"It's hard to believe that these planes are designed for function, because they are beautiful. But they are absolutely designed for function, as a bird or prey is, and that function is to kill. That we find them beautiful brings into question the very notion of beauty, but also our own intellectual and moral position. I am interested in that clash between what we feel and what we think." -Fiona Banner

augmented history

Whenever I am in a historical or old place I often try to imagine what was going on 20, 50,  100, 300, or 1000 years ago.  I think about who starred at the same bricks in wall while waiting for a carriage, who walked to work everyday leaving behind gently polished cobblestone trails, who jumped off this rock, who grabbed this handrail?  Were they murderers? lovers? soldiers? dancers? fathers? sisters? famous? boring? did they die feeling like they underachieved? Would they do things different?  I bet they wish they could be where I am at my age right now.  Maybe not but its fun to pretend.
A new Iphone app by the museum of London allows you to see all the way back to 1666.  By geo tagging historic photos and paintings you can "see the past" augmented with the present.

Modern Family

I've been searching for a replacement for Arrested Development to no avail until recently.  My search has ended with Modern Family.   Above are some of the best moments from one of the central characters.  Watch an episode and I think you'll be hooked.  You can see almost all of them here

The Morning Benders

I listen to new music almost everyday.  I have to listen to a lot to find an artist that really catches my ear.  The morning benders are the latest band to catch my attention with a fun cover of a song from the movie the Jungle Book.  So after multiple listens I decided to check out their other tunes and have been just as impressed.  Almost every song I listen to I find myself having to stop sketching designs and give the song a 3-5 star rating in itunes.

I would describe their sound something of a mix of acoustic Phoenix and The Shins with a little something else thrown in... enjoy

Cousteau

incase you didnt know, the world cup starts tomorrow

“Some people think football is a matter of life and death.
It is much more important than that.”
Bill Shankly

“Footballers can be like artists when the mind and body
are working as one. It is what Miles Davis does when he
plays free jazz—everything pulls together into one
intense moment that is beautiful.”
Lillian Thuram

“Rugby is a game for barbarians played by gentlemen.
Football is a game for gentlemen played by barbarians.”
Oscar Wilde

“Football is a grand game for developing a lad physically
and also morally, for he learns to play with good temper
and unselfishness, to play in his place, and to play the game,
and these are the best of training for any game of life.”
Robert Baden Powell

“To be a footballer means being a privileged interpreter
of the feelings and dreams of thousands of people.”
Cesar Luis Menotti

The Morning Benders

maybe it just sounds similar but I really like the strings part they took from Etta Jame's at last,
